Музично-історичні дисципліни наразі перебувають у стані кардинальної трансформації своїх засад. Сучасна епоха високих технологій висуває нові вимоги до усвідомлення історії як феномена духовного буття людства. Ще у першій половині ХХ століття традиційний підхід до історії як низки «фактів» активно змінювали французькі історики, представники «школи Анналів». Прагнення поставити у центр історичної ретроспективи людину з її внутрішнім світом, ідеалами та емоційними переживаннями змінило загальний «образ історії». Адже не у накопиченні джерел, не у колекціонуванні старовини, не у відкритті законів полягає її кінцева мета, а у розумінні сутності явищ. І ключем до цього може бути тільки поняття про людину, яка для історика, на думку Люсьєна Февра, «те саме, що скеля для мінералога, істота для біолога, зірка для астрофізика: щось, що потребує пояснення, розуміння і, врешті решт, осмислення» [Февр, 1991, с. 70]. Саме цей ключ до минулого і обирається у навчальному посібнику «Історія західної музики: Homo Musicus від античності до бароко».
